The secret to losing weight, is no secret at all but not everyone has been given the tools or the information in the correct way to receive and digest.
That is what I am doing today. I am providing you with the secret to losing weight, backed by science, but without the technical scientific jargon.
It’s true that eating less calories from nutrient dense foods and burning more through cardio and strength training will cause you to lose weight. This is not a secret!
The secret is… inner work.
How do you get from point A to point B? Point A is where you stand today and point B is where you want to be.
When you crack that, you uncover the secret to weight loss.
Take a moment to understand your point A. Get real with yourself. Spend some time understanding why you want what you want. This should start with internal dialogue free of judgement, be kind to yourself and show yourself love and compassion. Your internal dialogue is only helpful if it is free of negativity. Try talking to yourself, they way you would talk to a friend.
The food you consume is not the problem. The problem is USUALLY a concern that you have not given attention to or made a plan to resolve. Food consumed quickly, in a manner of panic, sadness, anxiety or stress (typically processed because it’s easier to eat quickly) and without feelings of joy is filling a void and is used to medicate, distract or numb the pain.
The next time that you have a food craving, dissect your craving by asking yourself, why do I want this food and why do I want it now? This will help you to become more mindful of what you eat and the effects that it has on your mind and body.
What came to the forefront of your mind when reading the above? Did a health concern surface? This could be a illness, a point of stress, a relationship, a job, a task at home or a lack of something in your life.
Now that you are aware of one or more obstacles getting in your way of your weight loss, you can begin to move forward to lasting weight loss.
1. Set yourself BIG goals with SHORT timelines, this will prevent you from becoming overwhelmed by your task. This will map out point A and how to get to point B.
2. Make a reward system for yourself that does not include food. For example. When I have worked out 3 times this week, I will reward myself with 45 minutes of mindless play on Instagram OR a guilt-free lazy Sunday morning.
The rewards should reflect the effort that you put into achieving your goal. If you have completed a project that pushed you out of your comfort zone; reward yourself with controlled retail therapy! Set a budget and go shopping as though you have been given a gift card.
3. Visualize point B. Keep in mind what your end goal will look and feel like. Fantasize about the places that you will go and the people that you will meet.
Some people find it useful to create a vision board as daily inspiration. It’s a good idea to keep it in a place that you will see it each morning to encourage you to bring your vision to life with every choice you make during the day. Or keep a journal so that you can evaluate your mental and physical state and keep track of your progress. I have a great 6 minute journal linked at the bottom of the post.
4. Ask yourself, are you ready to pay the price? Remember that the currency that you are using is time and effort. None of the work just happens for you. It takes consistency and commitment.
It’s up to you – and only you – to make the change. You control your life with free will and your choices reflect your values. Choose to be happy and eat to support a healthy body so that you can reach beyond your dreams.
Choose to make your health a priority!
I view this planet as a gift to explore. I want to travel. I want to meet people from all walks of life and learn from them. I can only do this if my body and mind are sound. It is the reason I choose, happily without feelings of restriction to eat a (mostly) plant-based diet. I know that a healthy body will take me anywhere I want to go.
So the secret to weight loss is to resolve any outstanding concerns that you have in your personal or professional life so that you don’t use food to fill this void and temporarily make you feel better. Food should be used to fuel and heal your body. Food should be made with love, whether you are cooking or preparing a meal for 1, 2 or a gathering!
I couldn’t write a blog about the secret to weight loss without mentioning a support system. Your team around you that you get to choose to help you daily. A support system is many people that offer you support, accountability and love whilst enabling confidence for you to crush your goals.
They may teach you recipes and grocery shop with you, they may encourage you to work out or watch your kids whilst you go for a run. They may be a sounding board for you to strategize your business or career plan. They may be a shoulder to lean on when you want to feel all your feelings and they may be your pillar of strength when you need to keep going.
A support system is crucial and not always made up of close friends and family. It can include a therapist, a health coach, a nutritionist a gym instructor, a virtual community, a spiritual leader or likeminded people. It can also be a smile from your children; small or adult.
Invite me to be a part of your support system and I will love and guide you to meet your end goal.
My blessing for you; to understand your point A and create a strategy to get to your point B while embracing the opportunities for growth and freedom to succeed.
Light and love,
